Carl Bernhard Berglund (1898–1991) was a Swedish painter and printmaker born in Mora Noret, Dalarna. Initially self-taught, Berglund pursued formal artistic training at age 29 at Carl Wilhelmson's painting school in Stockholm and later made study trips to Denmark and Norway.

Berglund debuted with the Dalarna Art Association in Falun in 1926 and continued exhibiting with the organization. He held a solo exhibition at Mässhallen in Falun in 1944 and exhibited with fellow artist Curt Jonsson in Esbjerg, Denmark, in 1948.

During the 1930s, Berglund undertook an extensive project documenting the churches of Dalarna in drawings that were subsequently produced as woodcuts. His broader work included landscapes, portraits, interiors and figure studies. Deeply connected to his native Dalarna, Berglund was also a friend of noted Swedish documentary photographer Karl Lärka, to whom he dedicated at least one known painting of the Mora landscape.

Why We Chose It

The palette is what drew us to this one — layers of rust, ochre and deep brown broken by patches of lingering snow. We especially loved the sense of a landscape suspended between seasons and Berglund's deep connection to the Swedish countryside.
