French Roses
Soft pink roses rise from a dark vase against an unexpected turquoise ground in this colorful still life by American painter Martha Holden.
Bold contrasts and loose, spontaneous brushwork give the traditional floral subject a distinctly modern character.
About the Artist
Martha Holden (b. 1951) is an American painter known for her expressive use of color across landscapes, florals, figurative works, and abstractions. She studied at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan before spending many years living and working in France.
Inspired by the expressive color of Fauvism and the tradition of plein-air painting, Holden developed a vibrant, spontaneous approach to oil painting centered on color, pattern, harmony, and rhythm. During her years in France, she painted extensively from the landscape surrounding Paris and the River Marne, while florals and still lifes have remained an important part of her wider body of work.
Holden’s work is represented in private, corporate, and public collections and has also appeared in numerous film and television productions. She continues to maintain an active studio practice in Los Angeles.
