Lively Country

An original Swedish landscape by Axel Nipstad, depicting a broad lake surrounded by vivid green fields beneath an expansive blue sky. A small farmhouse sits among the trees in the foreground, while flashes of yellow, turquoise and red move through the landscape in loose, energetic brushwork.

Signed Nipstad lower right. Sourced in Sweden and presented in its vintage painted wood frame.

About the Artist

Axel Nipstad Pettersson (1901–1953) was a Swedish painter and illustrator born in Sollefteå. As a young artist, he studied for a period under Helmer Osslund, the celebrated Swedish painter known for his expressive landscapes of northern Sweden. Nipstad later continued his artistic studies in France.

The landscape of northern Sweden became central to Nipstad’s work. He painted his native Ådalen as well as Dalarna and other northern regions, becoming particularly associated with boldly painted landscapes, mountain scenes, rivers and waterfalls. In 1934, four of his oil paintings were selected for the Liljevalchs Autumn Salon in Stockholm.

Nipstad also worked as an illustrator for Swedish publications including Folkets Dagblad, Social-Demokraten and Folket i Bild, and archival material preserves examples of his satirical drawings from the late 1920s and early 1930s. From 1945 onward, he devoted himself fully to painting.

Why We Chose It

The color immediately stood out to us — brilliant greens and blues broken by little flashes of yellow and red. We especially loved the energy of Nipstad’s brushwork and the way the lake opens up the landscape beneath that enormous Scandinavian sky.
