Sunlit Houses, 1933
An original Swedish oil painting by Sigge Ljungkvist (1907–1988), painted in 1933. A row of pale and red-roofed houses stretches beneath a blue-gray sky, separated from the viewer by an open field rendered in muted ochre, sage and moss green. The restrained palette and simplified forms give the landscape a distinctly Scandinavian character.
Signed and dated 1933 lower right. An original handwritten label remains on the reverse, identifying Ljungkvist at Smedjegatan 7, Jönköping and recording the painting's Swedish title, Solbelysta hus, or Sunlit Houses. Sourced in Sweden and presented in its vintage gilt-toned wood frame.
About the Artist
Johan Sigfrid “Sigge” Ljungkvist (1907–1988) was a Swedish painter and draftsman born in Väckelsång, Småland. Although largely self-taught, he studied painting under Swedish artist Gunnar Zilo from 1932–1936. Sunlit Houses was painted in 1933, placing it directly within this formative period of study.
Ljungkvist later traveled to France in 1949 for further artistic study and exhibited his work in Sweden during a career that continued for decades. His work encompassed landscapes, town and winter scenes, still lifes and figurative subjects. In 1967 he received a scholarship from Östgöta Konstförening. The surviving reverse label on this painting is particularly interesting, preserving both Ljungkvist's Jönköping address and the work's original Swedish title.
