About the Artist

Sten Jernberg (1915–1985) was a Swedish painter and draftsman born in Hagfors, Värmland. He studied painting at Börje Hovedskou's painting school in Gothenburg and continued his artistic education in Copenhagen under Harald Isenstein, the German-born artist and sculptor who established himself in Denmark after leaving Germany during the Nazi era.

Jernberg's career remained closely connected to his native Värmland. In addition to his own artistic practice, he worked as a drawing teacher in Munkfors and Hagfors and led art courses through ABF, Sweden's long-established Workers' Educational Association.

His known body of work includes landscapes, figurative compositions and still lifes, with rural and natural subjects appearing frequently among his surviving works. His landscapes are characterized by simplified forms and restrained color—a sensibility particularly evident in The Lichen Fields.
