Winter in Sedniv
Konstantin Lomykin | Winter in Sedniv, 1979
Winter sunlight falls across a snow-covered road in Sedniv, Ukraine, rendered in luminous blues, soft pinks, and flashes of warm ochre.
About the Artist
Konstantin Matveyevich Lomykin (1924–1993) was a Ukrainian painter and prominent figure within the Odesa school of painting. A graduate of the Odesa Art College, he became a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine and was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR in 1984.
Known for his landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and figurative works, Lomykin painted with the loose, expressive handling of color and light associated with the South Ukrainian painting tradition. His work is represented in Ukrainian museum collections and has appeared on the international secondary market, including at Christie’s.
The inscription identifying this landscape as Sedniv is particularly interesting. The historic village became an important artists’ retreat, where generations of Ukrainian painters gathered to work directly from the surrounding landscape.
