An original Swedish oil painting by Sven Svensson (1906–1999), depicting the vast, windswept alvar landscape of Öland. Layers of mossy green, rust, ochre and chalky white move across the limestone plain beneath a low blue-gray horizon, rendered with thick, expressive brushwork that gives the otherwise sparse landscape remarkable movement and texture.

Titled Alvaret. and signed by the artist. The alvar landscape of Öland became one of Svensson's recurring subjects throughout his career, making this painting particularly representative of the place with which his work became closely associated. Metropol

About the Artist

Sven Anders Emanuel Svensson (1906–1999) was a Swedish painter and draftsman whose career became deeply connected with the island of Öland. Born in Ålem in Småland, Svensson settled on Öland in 1918 and later lived in Mörbylånga. Sweden's Nationalencyklopedin describes him as one of the most distinctive interpreters of Öland's natural landscape. NE

Svensson studied at the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg from 1946–1948 under Nils Nilsson. Although he worked across painting and drawing—and is also documented as a graphic artist—Öland remained central to his artistic vocabulary. NE

The island's alvar became an especially recurring subject. Other documented works by Svensson include paintings and drawings titled Höst över Alvaret (Autumn over the Alvar), Alvaret i motljus (The Alvar in Backlight) and Dis över Alvaret (Mist over the Alvar), alongside numerous other views of Öland and Mörbylånga. That history makes Alvaret. particularly interesting: rather than an incidental landscape, it depicts one of the environments Svensson returned to repeatedly as an artist.

Svensson's work is documented in the collection of Nationalmuseum, Sweden's national museum of art and design. He remained associated with Öland for much of his life and died in Mörbylånga in 1999. His son, Sven-Bertil Svensson, also became an artist, continuing the family's connection to Swedish art. Wikidata

Why We Chose It

The texture is exceptional in this one. Rust, green, ochre and flashes of pale limestone move almost abstractly across the foreground before meeting that incredibly low horizon. We especially loved discovering how closely the subject connects to Svensson's career—the alvar wasn't simply a landscape he painted once, but a place he returned to again and again.
