Apples on Linen, 1928
An original still life by Danish painter Ejner Quaade, featuring red and green apples arranged across pale linen with a small glass of deep blue flowers at the center. The fruit is richly painted against a nearly black background, with saturated reds and greens emerging dramatically from the darker ground.
Signed E. Quaade lower right and dated 1928 on the back. Sourced in Sweden and presented in its vintage gilt-toned wood frame.
About the Artist
Ejner Quaade (1885–1966) was a Danish landscape and still life painter born in Horsens. He moved to Germany in 1904, studying first with Walther Püttner in Munich before joining Wilhelm Trübner in Karlsruhe in 1911. Quaade later continued his studies under Professor Spinner at the academy in Florence.
Beginning around 1911, Quaade worked in Hollerbach in Germany’s Odenwald as part of the Hollerbach artists’ colony, a small community of painters drawn to the area’s rural landscape and natural surroundings. There he was particularly known for painting valleys and trees. He remained close to fellow artist Waldemar Coste, and the two traveled extensively through Denmark together in 1925.
Later in life, Quaade returned permanently to Denmark. At the age of 72, he settled on a farm near Silkeborg in Jutland, where he converted a chicken coop into his studio and continued painting. He died in Silkeborg in 1966. His work is held by the Bezirksmuseum Buchen, which acquired a Quaade painting for its collection in 1987.

Why We Chose It
We loved the contrast in this one — saturated red and green apples against the dark background and pale linen, with the small cluster of blue flowers breaking up the composition. Quaade’s history and connection to the Hollerbach artists’ colony made it an especially interesting find.
