Farm by the Sea, 1936
An original Swedish oil painting by Sven Thunvall, depicting a cluster of farm buildings nestled into a green coastal landscape. Beyond the dark timber structures, the land gives way to a narrow band of blue-gray sea beneath a broad, overcast sky.
Signed S. Thunvall and dated 1936. Painted the year Thunvall turned eighteen, the work is particularly interesting in relation to the rural and coastal landscapes that would continue to appear throughout his later work. Sourced in Sweden and presented in its vintage dark wood frame.
About the Artist
Sven Alfred Thunvall (1918–1973) was a Swedish painter and draftsman, born in Bollnäs in Gävleborg County and later based in Stockholm. His known work includes landscapes, coastal views and scenes from across Sweden, including subjects from Småland, Uppsala and the Swedish coast.
This painting is particularly interesting for its date. Signed and dated 1936, it was painted the year Thunvall turned eighteen. The quiet coastal farm subject also anticipates the rural and seaside landscapes that recur throughout his later known work.

Why We Chose It
We loved how distinctly Scandinavian this one feels — dark farm buildings tucked into layers of green with the sea just visible beyond. Discovering that Thunvall painted it at only eighteen made it an especially interesting piece to add to the collection.
