Förvår

An original 1934 oil painting by Swedish artist Ernst Söderberg (1889–1967), depicting the countryside at the threshold of spring. A winding pale road cuts through fields of ochre, russet and emerging green toward distant farm buildings and deep blue hills, while a restless gray sky stretches across the horizon.

The original Swedish title, Förvår, refers to the earliest transition from winter into spring—a fitting title for a landscape caught between dormant earth and the first return of color. Signed and dated 1934, the painting is presented in its substantial vintage wood frame and was sourced in Sweden.

About the Artist

Ernst Söderberg (1889–1967) was a Swedish painter, draftsman and decorative artist with an unusually extensive artistic education. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg from 1908–1909, followed by working studies with German painter and decorative artist Wilhelm Köppen in Munich from 1912–1914. After coming to Sweden, he attended Carl Wilhelmson's painting school in 1917, took drawing courses at Valand under Birger Simonsson, and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1921–1924, including under noted Swedish artist Olle Hjortzberg. His years at the Royal Academy brought significant recognition. Söderberg received the Academy's Chancellor's Medal in 1923 and the Royal Medal in 1924, followed by a travel scholarship that supported further European study from 1927–1929. His travels and painting practice took him through continental Europe, including France, Italy and Spain. Auctionet

Why We Chose It

We loved the unusual moment of the season captured here—the landscape hasn't quite become spring. Russet earth, patches of fresh green and remnants of winter sit beneath a wonderfully dramatic blue-gray sky. The winding road and tiny red buildings give the large landscape just enough structure while Söderberg's loose, expressive brushwork keeps it feeling remarkably modern.
