An original 1958 oil painting by Swedish artist Ellis Wallin, depicting a windswept shoreline beneath a heavy gray sky. Muted blush, rust, slate blue and soft gray give the coastal scene a beautifully subdued atmosphere, while Wallin’s loose brushwork captures the movement of water and unsettled weather.

The original Swedish title, Regnvädret, translates to Rainy Weather. Signed and dated 1958 lower right and sourced in Sweden.

About the Artist

Ellis Wallin (1888–1972) was a Swedish painter and graphic artist born in Uppsala. He studied at Althin’s painting school in Stockholm and later at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, where his training also included etching. He subsequently spent more than a decade in France, living in Paris until 1933, with additional study travel in Italy and the Netherlands. Metropol

His years in France exposed him to French New Realism and helped shape the atmospheric, increasingly impressionistic handling of color seen in his later work. Landscapes remained an important part of his practice, with subjects drawn from both France and Sweden—particularly Uppsala and Sweden’s west coast. NE

Wallin is represented in the collection of Sweden’s Nationalmuseum, which records several of his paintings, including landscapes from Provence, Cagnes and Gullholmen. National Museum Collection

Why We Chose It

The weather is what makes this one. Wallin turned a gray day on the coast into something remarkably beautiful—the blush shoreline, silvery water and stormy sky feel quiet and almost nostalgic.
