A sunlit street winds between whitewashed buildings and terracotta roofs in this richly painted view of Taxco, Mexico, by Jean-Frédéric Schweckler. Loose, layered brushwork and a beautifully softened palette capture the hillside town’s architecture, color, and lived-in atmosphere.

Jean-Frédéric Schweckler (1888–1962) was a Swiss-born French-American painter who emigrated to the United States during the 1920s and later settled in Locust Valley, New York. A widely traveled artist, he painted throughout South America during the 1930s and extensively in Mexico during the 1950s, documenting the region’s landscapes, towns, architecture, and everyday life. This signed view of Taxco belongs to that important Mexican body of work.
