The Gentleman, 1957
An original mid-century Swedish portrait by Sven Richard Johansson (1911–1986), dated 1957. The sitter is rendered with broad, expressive passages of slate blue, ochre, cream and muted rust, his angular features emerging from a loosely painted interior.
There is a wonderful contrast between the formality of the sitter's shirt and tie and Johansson's decidedly painterly handling of the portrait. Signed and dated in red at lower left and sourced in Sweden. Presented in its vintage wood frame with linen surround.
About the Artist
Sven Richard Johansson (1911–1986) was a Swedish painter from Halmstad. He began painting in the early 1930s and studied under Waldemar Lorentzon, an important figure in Swedish modernism and member of the Halmstad Group, in 1933 and 1934. Johansson devoted himself fully to painting from 1946 and later traveled to the Netherlands, France and Spain on painting-study trips.
Johansson exhibited in Halmstad during the late 1940s and participated regularly in exhibitions organized by the Halland Art Association beginning in the early 1950s. His work encompassed landscapes, still lifes, interiors and figurative subjects, with simplified forms and a restrained modernist approach to color.

Why We Chose It
The face is what made this one — angular and expressive, with unexpected passages of blue, rust and ochre. We loved the contrast between the serious sitter and the loose, almost abstract handling of the paint.
