Timber Floaters
An original Swedish oil painting by Hannes Wagnstedt (1906–1980) depicting workers navigating a rushing river. Broad, energetic strokes of blue, white, ochre and rust capture the movement of the water, while loosely rendered figures and wooden boats bring a wonderful sense of activity to the scene.
Signed lower right and sourced in Sweden. Presented in its vintage gilt-toned frame.
About the Artist
Hannes Wagnstedt (1906–1980) was a Swedish painter born in Malå, Västerbotten. He studied under Swedish modernist painter Otte Sköld before traveling to Paris for further study in the late 1930s. His work frequently centered on the landscapes and people of northern Sweden.
Wagnstedt was particularly interested in documenting traditional working life as it disappeared from the region. Among his recurring subjects were timber floaters and the men who worked along northern Sweden's rivers. Late in his life, he documented the final period of timber floating on the Pite River. He also completed a number of public artworks and architectural commissions in Sweden.

Why We Chose It
The movement is what drew us to this one — icy blue water broken by quick strokes of white, rust and ochre, with the figures almost becoming part of the landscape. We especially loved discovering how closely the subject connects to Wagnstedt’s documented interest in the working life of northern Sweden.
